Doula care for the end of life can be thought of in three phases: Summing Up & Planning, Vigil, and Early Grief & Reprocessing.
During Summing Up & Planning visits the doula may work with the dying person to put details in place to support a good death, including advanced care planning and vigil planning to express their wishes. Doulas also work with clients to review their lives and develop meaningful remembrance projects.
During the last days of life, a period called active dying, the doula may provide presence at the bedside, emotional support, guidance and information on the dying process, assistance with practical care, and respite for caregivers. This period is called the Vigil.
After the client’s death, the doula supports Early Grief & Reprocessing. The doula may help loved ones reprocess their experiences, provide information about the grief process, and facilitate work toward a healthy return to living a well-functioning and meaningful life.
Work with a doula can begin in any phase of the dying process.
